You Can’t Smoke Before a Surf Contest

Listen to this bad boy. In Surfer Magazine Forum, the no. 4 world ranked surfer Joel Parkinson has backed calls for more rigorous drug testing in his sport:

“If it’s going to get real serious, I think for sure,” he told The Sun-Herald. “If the money goes up in the sport – and the prizemoney goes up by $600 next year for each place – then there should be testing.”

The Gold Coast surfer, ranked No.4 in the world, was in Sydney last week with No.3 Taj Burrow and the three-time world champion, Hawaiian Andy Irons, to promote their new surf movie Trilogy.

While the Association of Surfing Professionals has maintained that the sport adhered to strict World Anti-Doping Agency guidelines, Irons admitted he had never been tested during his professional career.

Burrow and Parkinson have been tested only once, both in France, where the government pays for tests.
